It doesn't take too long to find the Strathearn story on google: Nothern Ireland's audio version of DeLorean, with a big government investment and a spectacular crash. Perhaps the analogy is reasonable, because both products (the DMC car and the sma-2 and later sma-2000) are beautiful, and although neither quite delivers the performance they promised, they are lovely things to own.
Restoring one of these (especially the arm) does make you wonder about the build quality. But the motor is fundamentally effective, and with a high compliance cartridge these turntables can sing... And like the cars, they are a distinctive piece of history. There aren't many left (the cheaper sma-4 is inexcusably bad!).
