Aerolam cabinets and properly implemented metal domes were innovations then and these speakers are still capable of sounding absolutely remarkable: as if seeing onto a stage. In a small room they can be almost without rival, but they don't do copious bass (though they are not really bright) and they are fragile. The tweeters get bashed in (we have a few spares) but the main problem is the woofers, which split in the 2 piece surround. Repairs are almost impossible. Ours are intact, but that means they're expensive. The nextel finish is becoming problematic on many too - only a little bit on this pair. It can be redone, but we've never seen it...
We'd recommend a smooth solid state amp: anything from a Cyrus 1 up... Yes, the speakers would be two thirds of the price of the whole thing but you don't need to persist with the 'source first' approach now that a phone can sound so good!
