The three versions of the 4040 have different topologies and sounds, and the S2 and S3 are generally a little smoother. All are small, but sound perfectly big, and can definitely take on a NAD 3020. Excellent starter amplifier that can sit on a student's bookshelf (which is what it was designed for, in the days when an amplifier was more important than a screen...).
We have a tatty Mk 3 (pictured) and a mint Mk2, and some spares...
